Most people here distinguish between the two- I certainly do. But a few of us who DO distinguish still don't see the efficacy of swatting. It really only communicates irritation. It is a generic response, and although it is EASY and instinctive, that doesn't mean it is the best one. I question what it teaches. I do NOT call people who spank their kids moderately through a diaper abusive- but it is problematic for me, I can't deny it. When I swatted one of my kids on the hand for an electrical cord violation I felt horrible. And I got duck tape and taped all the cords in the house so I didn't run into the situation again. Partly that swat was MY fault for not having the foresight that cords would be fun to play with- and all the no no no's in the world couldn't communicate that it should not be done.
