DELL is investing in yet MORE service providers!!! This is an interesting trend. Other than XUMA, I know they have stakes in motive.com and all.com. Read the last paragraph.

Start-ups are also emerging to quickly stake out a claim as they offer up a value proposition over the incumbent players.

"These guys are recreating the wheel," said Joe Cha, San Francisco-based Xuma founder and chief executive.

Traditional systems integrators hire teams of consultants or engineers and send them out into the field according to the job. Essentially, these companies are running body shops which can't be leveraged through syndication.

In contrast, San Francisco-based Xuma offers a made-to-order Web service, much like the Dell "build-to-order" model. The company is a services company with a business model much like a manufacturing company, said Cha. The company's 70-plus engineers work on projects at the Xuma headquarters as opposed to traveling to the actual location.

Cha's strategy appears to be working, the company has more than 100 employees and reasonable sales. It's also received $8 million in funding from Dell Computer (DELL: news, msgs), and venture firm Menlo Ventures. The company has plans to go public next year and is in the process of choosing the investment banker to lead its IPO.
