I agree with everything you say, George. Emotional abuse of children is also extremely damaging to them. My point is that we cannot solve everything bad that happens to children, even though some of us would like to do so. Spanking is fairly clear cut and finite; emotional abuse is more subtle. My suspicion is that there is more emotional abuse in families where children are spanked, although I cannot prove that. We would need a very intrusive child protective system to weed out all emotionally abusive parents, while making spanking illegal would quickly end it as a child rearing practice. I don't see what is wrong with that; doing a bit of constructive work is better than none. I would be especially curious to see what happens in Sweden in the next generation.
