I think you are misunderstanding what I was trying to say. I believe that the very most basic thing we should expect of presidents is that they are actually in charge, in the sense that they recognize all the people around them, are able to stay awake in meetings, know what day it is and where they are, etc. I am not sure Reagan was truly cognizant during the latter days of his last term.

For a purported leftist, I have already given a great deal in acknowledging that I believe Reagan had basic integrity. For that, I do admire him in a way. This is something Bill Clinton does not have. However, there is something to be said for not sleeping on the job, etc. Clinton has not made a total hash of his job. Reagan got very lucky in that the chances he took worked, but he was an inflexible ideologue in many ways, and it is somewhat likely that the world would be a smouldering nuclear wasteland right now had the Soviets been slightly stronger than they were. I was truly frightened the entire time he was in office, and I do not like feeling that way.
