DM, <Do you have a link? [Intel's comments on future DDR support]>
No, I don't, but I'm very sure that I read it in an article somewhere. In any case, I know for a fact that Intel will support DDR in the future.
<DDR is not only faster than Rambus, it slightly exceeds the performance of the 840 dual-Rambus system.>
Look at the source again. It's Tom's Hardware Guide, not exactly a web site that really wants to put Rambus in a positive light. They already tried to call the curtain on the 820 Camino chipset by publishing a "preview" that made the performance look worse than a 440BX system w/ SDRAM. Even with current 820 systems, their performance results with RDRAM consistently score below the results of other hardware web sites such as AnandTech and Sharky Extreme. And not once has Tom's Hardware Guide ever said anything positive on Rambus. They even had many articles giving overviews of various memory technologies, as well as articles investigating Rambus in particular, and ALWAYS I've seen Rambus discussed in nothing more than a condescending tone.
If anything, that makes their current performance results with DDR suspect at best.
Ironically, the yapping over a few percentage points in benchmarks isn't going to mean squat in the big picture, because the real question is one of availability, cost, and production. If Rambus can address all three concerns and solve them very soon, it can still make big headway into the DRAM market even if DDR proves to be a little better in performance. (Of course, that's a big IF.)
