I understand what you are saying. I perceived that my argument had somehow annoyed you and that we had left discussion behind. I did not realize Christine had addressed this particular topic.

I mentioned it because in other animals (without extended development) the young leave as soon as possible and clearly do not belong to their parents. Some lower animals leave as soon as they are born.

But we have an extended development BECAUSE we have culture- and we have culture because we are a collective- because our children need to learn so much to fit into society. So you could say we have our children because of society (or at least that is my evolutionary perspective on the matter).

And while I call MY children MY children - I realize that they will live most of their lives away from me. They are mine genetically, and they are "mine" in terms of what I have taught them- but they seem (to me) to transcend my "ownership" of them (for lack of a better word). And I realize that the way they turn out will affect other people in the future much more than me. They will still be affecting other people when I am dead (or at least that is my hope). And they will affect the future people that they raise- so I have quite a small stake in this compared to society. I will die but society will continue on. We may actually agree on this - this may be a purely semantical problem. I'm really not sure.
