Brian, more detail on Intel's expansion of their Hudson MA plant, courtesy Paul Engel, Intel thread: Intel plans to purchase 0.18-micron lithography equipment to replace DEC's 0.25-micron lines as part of its "copy exactly" strategy, according to an Intel spokesman. As part of that effort, Intel has attempted to replicate the equipment and processes used in each of its fabs to minimize production errors in the delicate lithography process.
I am pretty sure this is "X-budget", in other words, had not been planned until extreme demand, or much higher than expected, showed up. Intel also announced expansion of several other plants, prior article I posted here. These also, I'm thinking, are X-budget. Demand she is great.
