ALAMEDA, Calif., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Wind River Systems
(Nasdaq: WIND) today announced availability of the newest version of its
award-winning Tornado(TM) development environment. Tornado 1.0.1 debuts a new
engineering and release process that enables Wind River to simultaneously
release all products on all hosts and target architectures offering customers
immediate access to the most current version of several hundred individual-
products - a feat unmatched in the embedded systems industry.

Sets New Industry Standard
"The embedded systems market is growing very rapidly and we are taking
market share. This new release process enables us meet the increasing demand
with relative ease," said Larrimore. "In the past, it could take months to
roll out a single maintenance release. Now we can move our products out the
door faster, with more frequent releases. By re-engineering our own internal
processes at the same time we have been delivering the industry's leading
product - Tornado, Wind River once again sets the industry standard for
releasing software in a manner that best meets developers' needs."
This new engineering and release process is part of Wind River's
development of a company infrastructure to sail through the $100 million
revenue mark. It will enable Wind River to quickly distribute accurate and
timely product releases ensuring immediate availability of the highest quality
software. Beginning with Tornado 1.0.1, all Wind River products regardless of
host system, will also be released on one CD-ROM per target architecture,
again simplifying the customer's initialization process.

Tornado 1.0.1 Technical Features
Based on customer feedback, Tornado 1.0.1 includes a new graphical
installation and set-up procedure to improve customers' ease of use and time
to market.
"Since the beginning of Wind River's existence, our goal has been to
provide customers with turnkey development solutions to ease the complexity of
software programming and shorten their overall development cycle," said David
Larrimore vice president of marketing for Wind River Systems. "This new
installation process makes an already very intuitive product even easier to
use."
The Tornado application programming interface (API) guide has also been
expanded to further simplify the integration of new tools by developers and
third party partners. The symbol table, originally available on either the
host or target, is now synchronized to enable developers to use it in both
locations and still have access to the Tornado tools.
"Having the right tools available makes any programming job easier,"
continued Larrimore. "Wind River already has over 90 third party Tornado
partners. The updated API guide will further reduce the time needed to
integrate new tools with the Tornado development environment."

Availability
Tornado 1.0.1 is available as a free automatic upgrade for all Wind River

Tornado Development Environment
Available for UNIX, Windows 95, and Windows NT host platforms, Tornado
consists of three integrated components: the Tornado tool suite, a set of
powerful tools and utilities on both the host and the target; VxWorks(R), the
industry's most powerful and scalable real-time operating system, which
executes on the embedded target processor; and a full range of communications
options, such as Ethernet, serial line, BDM, ICE, or ROM emulator for the
target connection to the host. Completely open and extensible, Tornado also
facilitates the use of third-party and customer-developed tools. Tornado was
awarded EDN Magazine's 1995 Embedded Development Software Innovation of the
Year award and was included in EE:Times' Best 1995 Technologies Special
Report. Tornado is used by thousands of developers and has more than 90 ISV
(independent software vendor) and IHV (independent hardware vendor) partners.
