But what we SHOULD WORRY ABOUT are terrorist activities, such has been highlighted with the arrest this week of a suspected member of Bin Laden's organization......., ...and it is likely that others actually have succeeded in entering the US and are probably preparing as we speak to explode bombs in various cities here.
One more point about this story...
washingtonpost.com
The U.S. Customs Service has placed all 301 ports of entry into the United States on high alert after the arrest of an Algerian in Washington state who had crossed the border from Canada with more than 100 pounds of bomb-making supplies and a sophisticated detonating device in a rental car.
Ahmed Ressam, 32, a resident of Montreal who had been denied refugee status by Canadian officials because of his alleged links to an Islamic terrorist group known as the Islamic Armed Group (GIA), was arrested by customs officials in Port Angeles, Wash., five days ago and charged in Seattle on Friday with transporting explosives into the United States, providing false identification and lying to authorities.
I dearly hope I'm wrong about this, but if Rassam was scheduled to leave the US for London on Wednesday, leaving behind a delayed action device, AND IF THIS WAS A COORDINATED ATTACK by Bin Laden's group (or any other), then the probability is high that we'll see some "events" over Xmas weekend.
Seattle is not a high priority target now that the WTO meeting has ended. So if an attack was planned for the Pacific Northwest, I would suspect that other cities, with more political "newsworthiness" have been targeted as well, like NYC, LA, or San Francisco.
Call it a hunch that I dearly hope is incorrect. But since they new Rassam's assumed itinerary, this was a pretty sophisticated operation (as terrorist attacks go). There were preparations for escape outside the US to Europe. That indicates to me that there is a support organization backing Rassam up and that other attacks are likely from others.
Here in the DC area, I plan on avoiding large crowds during these holiday festivities... certainly ones sponsored by govt representatives or located in noteworthy landmarks. But I don't really expect an attack here. Terrorists don't usually target this city because the last thing they want to do is provoke the US to go to war (which p*ssed-off congressmen might be inclined to do). Nope... just hit on the periphery of power, namely large cities.

Ron
