Society's Child My great niece, Tracy, 9 years old, died day before yesterday. She weighed 13 pounds and was profoundly underdeveloped. She never said a word, or smiled, or ate, or even scratched her face in her entire life. Her parents worshipped her and did everything they could for her, and are saddened by their loss although they never communicated with her in any way except holding her. She was their child, not society's child. Society didn't give a damn for her. If the parents had taken out the feeding tube and let her starve to death, society might well have prosecuted them for murder or depraved indifference. Tracy, given what she was, belonged to them, but they could not treat her as mere property or turn her lose like Mork saying to the egg "be free!"
