Direct access Internet system developed.

A Direct Internet Access System(DIAS) has been developed by the Telecommunications and Computer Networking Group(TeNeT)in collaboration with Chennai based Banyan Networks.

The telecom service providers can now without changing the existing cabling infrastructure provide high-bandwidth Internet access with voice services.

DIAS is permanently available at the customers premises unlike the current dial-up access like integrated switched digital network (ISDN) and public switched telephone network (PSTN).

A digital subscriber loop (DSL)technique would be used to provide seamless voice and data connectivity to the customers.

With DIAS the subscriber need not make use of the modem. The user requires digital subscriber unit (DSU)that combines voice and Internet data packets on a single tested pair of wire. And it requires an integrated access node (IAN)to separates the voice and data traffic from the multiple subscribers and directs them independently to the PSTN and Internet respectively.

The DSU is designed for small offices and residential users and provides a permanent Internet connection.

The high-bit rate DSU is designed for the corporate users, provides voice connectivity for up to eight phones and a permanent bandwidth up to 2 mbps.

The advantage is that the subcribers will not have to pay for te long distance calls. (Sawaal 12/20/99)
