CMGI spins off AltaVista with IPO

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- CMGI plans to spin off Internet search engine AltaVista with a $300 million initial public offering, according to a regulatory filing released by the Securities and Exchange Commission Friday.

CMGI (CMGI: news, msgs) holds 82 percent of the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company. According to the Form S-1, CMGI plans to use the proceeds for working capital, advertising and other general corporate purposes. See related story.

Shares of CMGI closed down 9 3/4 at 211 13/16 on Friday.
