You are exactly right; that is the way to do it.This what happened to me. I converted 1/2 the stock into options on the sudden drop to 150 in early September. I made about about 5x what I wold have just holding the stock, even though I was selling stock into the drop. Although the stock dropped 20%, the options went down 60%, and when the stock rebounded, the options have obviously out run it by a large multiple.

I have all stock now again, and will do the whole drill again on the next 25% drop. I will probably grab options out as far as possible and more leaps, so that the time is on my side.
