BPL to buy out TV unit in Europe

The BPL group will acquire a television manufacturing company in the European Union. The unit is the one from where the company has been sourcing CTV sets for sale in overseas markets for over a year now. The final agreement is likely to be signed in a couple of weeks.

Following this acquisition, BPL will double its CTV production capacity to 6,00,000 units from 3,00,000 units per annum. Even though the initial outgo will be around Rs100mn to buy the plant along with 400-employees, the total outlay could be around US$10mn (Rs4.4mn).

BPL`s marketing strategy envisages selling CTV`s under original equipment manufacturer basis to potential partners may make its announcement after getting the necessary approvals from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The BPL group`s international marketing division has set a target of Rs6bn for the fiscal 2001-2002. The export target of BPL Ltd in the current fiscal is pegged at 1,58,203 CTVunits worth Rs800mn.

BPL`s scrip closed at a low of Rs317 on Friday at the BSE from Thursday`s close of Rs341.80.(Probity)
