I wonder if anyone knows whether this stocks slide can be attributed to their loss of Gibson Guitars at ALL Guitar Centers? I think so. I believe, don't quote me on this, that Gibson bailed because of GTRC's stupid business model. Simply, THEY only sell musical merchandise, THEY DON'T SERVICE IT. Granted it is a great place to go look at a lot of equipment under one roof but it all ends there. Are the guitars properly set-up upon unpacking from the mfg.? Of course not! "They're set up at the factory". Any guitarist knows that these things have to be 'fine tuned' not to mention each guitars unique peculiarities. They are wood, and wood swells and contracts...plus some of these guitars are made in either Mexico or overseas...bottom line: THEY NEED TO BE SETUP!! Amp's? They have lots of them. Do they service them?? NO!! Why not?? Accessories: lots of them. Probably the only advantage over your local dealer is their selection. But have a problem with them... You are probably better off patronizing your local dealer as most will properly set up the guitar and service it as well as your amp and electronics. And most local dealers charge you the same or will match the price of GTRC. Even if you pay a little more for your musical equipment, your mom and pop dealer provides a lot more service.

Have I ever bought anything from GTRC? Yes, and speaking from experience, I would never do it again. See the above. They only sell...no service. And once the sale is done that's it, despite their 30/30 guarentee. Again a great place to look at a lot of toys and accessories. But remember what your mom and dad told you...you get what you pay for.

And what about Musicians Friend? When you look at it, it makes sense that GTRC bought them...at least for their internet presence. I have bought from them too and have been satisfied until now. And boy will I never do that again!! They have screwed up a small order that was placed on 12/6/99. Still don't have it. Without getting into it...it seems as though they invested more in sales literature (catalogs etc.) and not enough in net infrastructure. I think that they will be hurt by this both in reputation and $$$'s. Don't think I'm not telling my musician friends!! Numerous e-mails have netted me nothing...I just want my ordered item!!

Am I disgruntled? HELL YES!! They're ruining my holidays. Would I own the stock? No. I personally don't own GTRC and I am not short shares of GTRC. Nor am I musicial instruments dealer. I am an investor. And being an investor, you look at everything. (Still trying to figure out how they dropped my order) But Peter Lynch always said that one should buy companies that they have experience with. I have with both Guitar Center and Musicians Friend. I have been disappointed by both. Looks like the stock price bears this out! You be the judge. Ask yourself why Gibson bailed on them. Why would they risk loss of sales at ALL of Guitar Center's locations throughout the US? And these are great locations! Why? Who'll be next? Losing Fender would huge.
