Your question is a good one. The answer is one word. GREED. An addendum. INCOMPETENCE. Once McLaughlin took over, the handwriting was on the wall. With many worthwhile and potentially profitable projects (like strep), the testing methodology developed was ripe for entry to new areas. But, from his chateau, McLaughlin wasn't capable of orchestrating anything but a new contract for himself. Firing the scientists and closing Singapore showed exactly where he was coming from. Then bringing in the piggies who ultimately fired him, came back with a bite. But so what. He got trips on the Concorde and a job and a chance to play in the American stock market. Now, there is no hope. The company is led by a guy named Ehrlich who doesn't have clue about diagnostics.
