The funny thing is that this originates in the European right, the reactionary wing of which was profoundly anti- capitalist and anti- American. Heidegger grew out of that tradition, and developed the philosophy which become the underpinning of a lot of deep ecology, the main idea being that by treating the world too instrumentally, we stand in a less authentic relationship to it, and that to recover the proper relationship to it, we have to allow Being to reveal itself to us, and recover the sense of the sacred. Heidegger goes so far as to talk about a return of the "gods", the ancient nature gods, that is......He became a Nazi, and although he repudiated them, his subsequent rejection seemed to have a lot to do with their infatuation with technology, although he didn't approve of mass murder......Anyway, since anti- capitalist rhetoric is "Left" in this country, it all became a part of the Left...... |
