Engineer, as always, the devil is in the details.

The stock I ended up selling had a loss over the time that I held it, and had much less attractive prospects than Q going forward so:

1) I get to write off the money as a charitable contribution,
2) I get to write off the tax loss due to the difference in price from bought to sold,
3) I get to rid my portfolio of a less attractive stock, and
4) I get to keep my QCOM and reap the benefits of it's future appreciation to a greater degree.

I expect the future appreciation in my Q shares that I didn't sell will more than make up for the future tax "liability". I'm not sure I understand what you meant about losing the tax deduction on the "extra money" I would have donated, since I'm donating the same amount in either case...
