Options....STocks too for that matter.
When I began here at S.I. it was obvious to all I was a raw beginner. Many people told me to "paper trade" first. (Some said that when I started options too). But I cant...The paper trading is hard to get committed to. And the losses and wins...well I didnt really FEEL them.
Nothing like a good slap across the face as a call expires worthless.

No shock like the shock of seeing a triple become a double and then evaporate because I held it and held it and....

The "feeling" (for me anyway) led to truly learning what to do. Paper trading....and also a book...cannot do that.
People have given me various formulas, and they are helpful. But a lot of it depends upon HAVING THE RIGHT STOCK. And when you do, you (almost) can do no wrong.
And taking profits is URGENT in options, much more so than in stocks.
Because, of course, the options can expire just at the worst time for you.
