The use of the power of a nation to commit great evil is the topic of a recent book about Leopold of Belgium and the Belgian Congo, "King Leopold's Ghost". Reading how the natives of the Congo were treated would make a stone weep.

There is a literary treatment that predates that book by a bit. Conrad, "Heart of Darkness", later transmogrified into a famous movie. "I love the smell of Napalm in the morning". The subject of Africa in general makes me shudder, there's still so many bad things going on there, and it's hard to see what can be done about it.

But, on a happier note, S. Africa seems to be doing pretty well these days, and the neighboring countries seem to be settling down somewhat, so maybe there's hope.

Christmas cheers, Dan.
