Hi all, let me post some actual specs for hard drives:

RPM avg seek ms
JTS (new line of 3.5) <=2.0G 5400 <12
JTS (old line of 3.5) 1.7-3.0G 4500 14
Western Digital 1.6-3.1G 5200 12
Fujitsu <= 2.5G 5400 10
Quantum 3.2G fireball 4500 10.5
Quantum Bigfoot 3600 14 or 15?
Seagate Medalist 2.5G 5400 11
Seagate Medalist 3.0G 4500 12
IBM's latest IDE drives 5400 9
Maxtor I think older models are comparatively slow (4480RPM 12ms),
and newer models among the faster drives (5400 11ms)

As you can see, as far as IDE drives go, the specs favor IBM,
Fujitsu, and occasionally Seagate drives. The current JTS drives
have specs which exceed those of many drives produced
by Quantum, Western Digital, Seagate, and Maxtor. With the
possible exception of the quantum bigfoots, the performance diff.
between all of these drives should be barely noticeable for the
typical user.

500,000 hours MTBF is the highest I have seen for IDE drives,
and is achieved by several drive makers including JTS.
However, SCSI drives often have MTBF of 1,000,000 hours since people
can be fussy about their servers.
