To clarify, I was speaking about the Jewish religion, not the Christian one. I know Christianity adopted a lot of pagan rituals. In particular, I was talking about the Jewish religion after David, which adopted idol worship and sacrifice from the pagans. After the second destruction of the Temple, that was eventually purged, at least that's what Thomas Cahill says ("Gifts of the Jews").

One could argue that idol worship and sacrifice remain part of the Catholic church, that's what some Protestant theologians would argue, anyway. The Puritans did not celebrate Christmas because it was a pagan holiday.
