Both.

Do you remember the good old days when people would spend the government's money because it was there and because someone said they could? They used the money as long as it was made available. Does that justify making it available? Doing it practically destroyed the nation. There was so much good to be done and money does nothing but good.

This is much like availability of bandwidth and processing power. It provides its own raison d'etre. It creates its own need. We are its slaves as long as we remain in ignorance to its tyranny.

Consider MSFT apps. When first created they were great. Faster processors, more memory, and Internet enabled the creators of those apps to expand them and give everyone what they want. The result of this unbridled utilization of resources has been universal bloat. The corruption of the apps from this bloat is so thorough that most of the value has gone negative as is seen when trying to get the simplest of tasks to work properly consistently.

We spend a lot of time trying to convince ourselves that this outcome is better. We work longer for cheaper. This is Greenspan's WinXXX productivity. It doesn't matter what you're doing as long as you do more of it.
