To all: here's a nice news release from Reg Tech, with more progress from Detroit. I'm not sure what to make of such a brief resume.
It sounds GOOD.
Reg mentions automotive air conditioner size (Rand Cam compressor half the size of regular ones) but not cost and weight.
cost: Reg does not care to estimate what it would cost to build a new type of compressor with exotic materials and new tooling; the old compressors would have generic materials, and tooling all paid for.
maintenance: Reg does not care to project whether the new design would be less leaky that those terrible freon-losing contraptions we know and hate. Also no clue as to seal erosion.
weight: Reg does not indicate if weight is also halved-- this is a critical issue for fuel economy
efficiency: Reg does not indicate comparison of horsepower/BTU of cooling, versus the old compressor types.

Wed 16 Apr 97 News Release
Mr John Robertson reports
The company and its US subsidiary company, Regi US Inc, have received a
full technical report on the testing events that was completed in Detroit,
MI, after the assembly and testing of phase two.
The compressor ran at normal temperature and very quietly. Parts inspection
show intended contact patterns, and will be reassembled for testing next
week at ETL of Cortland, NY.
These tests are very comparable to the phase two compressor test performed
at Detroit on February 16 1997 that ran at 2,300 rpm - ambient temp 72 deg.
- duct temp 58 deg.
The Rand Cam air conditioning unit is a quiet and smooth running unit that
is one half the size of the existing air conditioning units used in
automobiles.
