One of the striking characteristics of having the @Home service is that you become gradually aware that the problems of the net aren't in the wires. The bandwidth problem as it currently exists is merely the same as the problem of expanding the freeway to accommodate a certain level of usage. The freeways don't always grow in size. There is an ever growing quantity of traffic peaked freeways. They don't need to be expanded. The freeway size and total miles covered is a proportional to population and a constant function of kind of traffic in the number of vehicles on it instantaneously. What needs to be done is repair of potholes, egresses, and ingresses. When you use @Home also you become painfully aware of how slow and latent most server farms are. What good is more bandwidth if the bottleneck persists at origination?

It is interesting that RR is addressing this through their deal with Akamai.
