OT It is astounding to me that Canadians can set there, on our border, and watch what is going on politically in both countries, without realizing that what you have stated it the cause of their problems.

I think a majority of folks (though a slim majority) up here understand that the high tax, high spending policies are crushing the economy. The province of Alberta "gets it". They have no sales tax and have income taxes that are quite a bit lower than the other provinces. Needless to say their economy is booming. Ontario elected a conservative government a while back and is moving (slowly) down the same road as Alberta.

Most Americans would call the the government we have here in British Columbia a bunch of commies. They are all ex-union executives and they LOVE taxes and haven't balanced a budget in 8 years. The minimum wage is $1 above the national average and they want to raise it another $1. The premier resigned a few months ago after an RCMP raid on his house. The most corrupt and incompetent government I've ever lived under. They are TOAST in the next election. The party in waiting promises big tax cuts and balanced budget legislation. We shall see.

At the national level, the Liberals are currently in power. Problem is that there are now 2 parties that split the right wing vote (Conservatives and the Reform Party), pretty much guaranteeing a reelection of the Liberals. And as Jean mentioned, the Prime Minister and a few hand-picked advisors set policy and run the country. They pretty much do as they please.

One of the big problems up here is the "brain drain". Many of the brightest and best head south for higher salaries and lower taxes. I tried to move south many years ago. Despite having a Ph.D. from an American university and running a (one person) successful software company, you guys didn't want me!!! sniff, sniff.
