It's the same problem in the music production, except the Macs have an edge. They don't run the Windows crap at Lucas. There's a huge want of high-end workstations that aren't a multi-purpose OS. SGI dropped more than one ball.

At a Christmas party in the city, a fellow had the new Sony digital camcorder. I was fascinated by that (not quite as much as he was however). You'd need a RAID array just about to do serious production work. Anyway, there was a little port on the side of the camera, and it wasn't USB <g> It plugs into a future Sony workstation I think.

Even at the thinnest level, multi-purpose PC's are absolute bullsh*t. Last month I installed the Beatnic music plug-in for my neighbor on a Win95 PC. This is the same PC used for accessing a brokerage account. The plug-in took Windows PPP *OUT*. God knows of course what .dll file got hosed. They (M$) don't actually NAME a file ppp.dll or something that would make sense. Anyway, the multi-purpose browser+ plug-in on the Windows PC paradigm became hosed and he was unable to access his FINANCIAL life because of a hobby thing for the time it took to re-install the operating system.
