Nextlink's 21% Jump A Mystery On Wall Street

NEW YORK -- If you blinked, you missed it.

Just 30 minutes prior to market close, Nextlink Communications Inc. (NXLK) was doing what a lot of competitive local exchange carriers did on a day where interest rate concerns were alleviated: the company was trading up about 8%.

Then, something happened that seemingly no one on Wall Street could explain Tuesday evening: the stock jumped another 13%. Shares of Nextlink closed at 91 3/8, up 15 7/8, or 21%, after hitting a 52-week high of 91 1/2.

All of it on no apparent news.

"No one knows," said PaineWebber analyst John Hodulik. "Buyers, sellers, we've got all kinds of people calling around."

Lehman Brothers analyst Bill Garrahan noted that the company just named Nate Davis president and chief operating officer. Davis most recently served as Nextel Communication Inc.'s (NXTL) executive vice president of technical services.

"That's not going to move it," Garrahan said.

A Nextlink spokesman said the company had released no news to affect the market Tuesday afternoon.

Trading was heavy at the end of the day, with a total of 1.2 million shares swapping hands versus the daily average of 1 million shares.

The company's previous high was set Friday, when the stock hit 77 7/16. Nextlink's shares have appreciated about 663% in the past year.
