As you know, I came very close to joining a contemplative order (the Benedictines) and your memory is quite correct on this point: One of my cousins joined the Ursulines and another cousin was a Jesuit. And I am closely related to Elizabeth Seton. Have you ever seen a nun draw a cross on the top of a sheet of paper before she begins writing? I have seen it for most of my life and I understand the symbol and the depth of what the symbols evoke--as I understand symbols from other cultures and cherish them, use them to help me to understand other people.
