Juno surges amid plans for free online service

PALO ALTO, Calif., Dec 21 (Reuters) - Shares of Juno Online
Services Inc <JWEB.O> surged Tuesday following yesterday's
announcement that it would introduce a new free Internet
service.
The stock rose 37-3/4 to 66-3/4 and was the most active
issue on NASDAQ.
Juno, which started out as a free e-mail provider, said
Monday it would broaden its offerings to include a free
ad-supported Internet service, and another low-cost service
designed to put pressure on premium-priced services like
America Online<AOL.N>.
Free ad-supported Internet services have gained popularity
over the past several months as customers show a willingness to
accept a permanent advertising window on their screens as an
alternative to paying for access.
NetZero Inc.<NZRO.O>, which also offers a free service, was
another big gainer on NASDAQ Tuesday, rising 10-3/8 to
33-15/16.
