John and others, <I suppose you will suggest that all those folks that couldn't get a 733 Intel chip, went out and bought an Athlon based system?>

That might point to a fallacy behind all of this cheering going on over the shortage of Intel parts. I know this shortage represents a tremendous opportunity for AMD and Athlon. But the fact that the shortage still exists tells me that AMD isn't able to pick up Intel's slack.

I know I'm generalizing here, but I think people ought to be reminded that AMD is expected to produce only 800K Athlons this quarter. And frankly that isn't a lot, given that AMD used to sell up to 6M units per quarter back in the K6-2 days.

On the other hand, you could look at things optimistically and say, "If AMD can break even with just 800K Athlons, imagine what they can do with 6M!" Yes, but also imagine what could happen if supply outweighed demand. Intel will lower the boom on prices, and that will be murder for both companies.
