That the date for celebrating the birth of Christ, which was unknown really, was positioned as an alternative to Saturnalia does not necessarily make it usurpation, IMO. I don't think that you are being urged to concede the Solstice--at least, certainly not by me. Most educated people know, or should know, the history behind the particular date; it does not detract from the potential joy of the celebration for those who believe in the divinity of Christ and for many who do not but who do endorse the spirit of warmth and giving fostered by the holiday.
