Michael, why is it abusive to hit an adult, who has at least a chance of self defense, and acceptable to hit a child, a much less powerful person?

Since the state has already decided that hitting an adult is abusive, the absolute privacy of families has already been abridged. Yet no one I can remember has made the argument that the laws against spousal battery should be repealed, even though the result of those laws is sometimes family members going to jail.

I don't think an occasional swat on the behind is child abuse. But if there is a law against hitting a spouse then logically there should be one against hitting children. I would start with public health education and classes in effective discipline. I suspect that a parent who would continue to hit a child after all that could be sent to jail, but would definitely understand the consequences of her behavior. Isn't teaching the consequences of behavior exactly what spanking is all about? Is it possible we expect more of a learning curve from children than from adults?
