saw goebel on the carson show one night. another guest had been on ahead of him. i think it was dean martin. when goebel came out, martin got up and moved over onto the couch. goebel then sat immediately to carson's right. goebel was at least three sheets to the wind, as many guests were in those days, including dean martin. goebel even had a 'drink' in his right hand. every time he looked to his left to address johnny, martin (i think it was dean, i may be wrong) would lean over and flick ashes from his cigarette in goebels drink. the audience would see this and begin to chuckle, and goebel would think they were laughing at what he was saying to johnny. so he'd take another sip of his drink and then really get into his story a little more, and dean would lean over again and pop a few more ashes into george's drink. soon the audience was beside itself, and goebel was thrilled that he was going over so big that night. it was a classic moment i'll never forget. :) mark
