AKAM credit........Yahoo's secret may be how little it gives users: 19.3 kilobytes in
images and text with each download of its home page, compared with
23.6 for AltaVista, 29.8 for MSN and 24.1 for Lycos. What's more,
according to a Fortune interview with Yahoo CTO Farzad "Zod"
Nazem, Yahoo's speed has doubled in recent weeks thanks to a deal
with fellow speed-demon Akamai (AKAM) Technologies. Akamai,
which speeds access to its clients' Web sites by hosting them across its
1,700 servers, went public less than two months ago and has a market
cap of $28 billion, compared to Yahoo's $107 billion. Yahoo's shares
were up 10 percent Tuesday on the traffic stats, while Akamai's soared
5 percent on a new hosting deal with RoadRunner.
