I regret if my description of the Ackroyd book about Sir Thomas More made it sound like he's a propagandist. He's not. It did present a complete history of More, who was a complex man in a complex time. If all you know about More is, say, the movie about him (can't remember the name), then you may not be aware that he did, in fact, condemn heretics to death.

You may also not be aware of why he was condemned and executed. It wasn't for refusing to agree to the succession of Henry's heirs by Anne Boylin, which is what I had been taught. The oath that More refused to take would have required him to agree with every act of Parliament in that session, some of which had to do with religion that was inconsistent with the Catholic position. He offered to swear to the succession without affirming the other acts of Parliament, and some of the men who were there urged Henry VIII to accept that, but that was not acceptable to the king.
