FORT SMITH, Ark.--Beverly Enterprises Inc. (BEV) said it will provide e-mail
to its elderly residents as part of a pilot program in 10 of its nursing homes
in California and Arkansas.

Residents at each of the homes will have access to a communal computer from
Dell Computer Corp. (DELL). If the program is successful after two months, the
nation's largest nursing home chain said it will expand the program to other
homes and may purchase more Dell computers for residents to use.

At a Gerontological Society of America conference last month, scientists
provided anecdotal evidence that e-mail and Internet use can help nursing home
residents overcome loneliness, boredom, helplessness and decline of mental
skills. A program called LinkingAges, a 12-week course that teaches seniors how
to use the Internet, has reported promising changes in residents' emotional
states after they learned to navigate the Internet.
