1) One could provide for one's son's defense even while acknowledging a high probability of guilt. I am reminded of the words of Thomas, "Help thou my unbelief."

2) I tend to regard the Bible and all similar foundations of religious belief as metaphor, an attempt to convey what really cannot be conveyed.
