The Senate was right not to look at stuff. Trying to sway an impeachment trial with a lot of secret allegations, unsupported by police or judicial records, sets a terrible precedent. This is true even if Clinton was guilty of every single charge. Innocent or guilty, he had no way to confront the accusers or answer the charges.

The next time the President and Congress get into a serious fight, what is to prevent the President's enemies from cooking up a bunch of allegations, supported by similar credible accusations? Unless standards of proof are maintained, it's possible. Secret accusations can't even be tried in the court of public opinion.

Congressmen are supposed to maintain our system of laws, not tear them down to get at a President they don't like.
