Your plodding method is sound. Perhaps I should follow it in the future.

I posted this problem on another forum. A fellow replied that he had the same malfunction, which disappeared after a clean install of WIN98SE. I have been wanting to reinstall everything on my old machine and will do so after I get the new machine up to speed.
