Just wanted to say a few things. The first is that no matter how much doomsaying or soothsaying anyone does .. none of us really has any idea what the heck is going to happen in the next few weeks. For every system that depends on the date and has the potential to fail, there's one that's completely immune to Y2K. And vice versa. :) Just buckle up, take stock of your supplies and prepare for either a great big sigh of relief or a great big i-told-you-so. Either way, it's a unique period in history brought about by the short-sightedness of mankind and his failure to temper technological advancement with proper discipline .. so revel in it!
I'd advise everyone and their loved ones to avoid highly populated areas as much as possible simply because of the threat of terrorism or fanaticism. I am a trusting person and believe in the good of mankind .. but it's not so far-fetched that one person in ten million sets a bomb off on first night, and I can't say I trust every single person in a ten million person crowd. Don't risk it, find some other way to share the new year with the ones you love.
After celebrating New Year's Eve at a formal ball, my hope is that afterward my girlfriend and I will be sitting by a cozy fire in a mansion in Newport, sipping champagne and watching the madness of the new year unfold on cable TV with detached amusement. If the water stops running, we'll use bottled water. If the heat goes out, we'll stoke the fire. If the power goes out, we'll light candles - it's all the more romantic.
Unfortunately I wish very badly to see my family this time of year and so I will be attempting to catch a flight on Jan 3 - safety permitting, of course. Hopefully I will live to post again. ;)
Threads like this are refreshing because they remind me that many of us are still capable of banding together to share concerns, advice, feelings, and best wishes in the face of potential disaster.
Merry xmas to everyone, and have a safe .. and HAPPY .. new year!
Whatever happens, it will be one to remember.
