Internet phone service powered by Lucent: This story appeared in the Financial Times on 12/17 as reported by Bloomberg UK but I haven't seen mention of it here. It's worth noticing...
"Thus to Introduce High-Quality Internet Phone Calls, FT Says By Ali Scott
London, Dec. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Thus Plc, a U.K. Internet provider owned by ScottishPower Plc, will become the first ISP in Europe to allow full voice communications via the Internet, the Financial Times reported, without citing sources. Internet phone calls have previously been of low voice quality due to poor signals, and the new technology, likely to be copied by other telecoms companies, will allow for Internet calls of fixed-line quality at lower prices. Thus says it will spend at least 100 million pounds ($161 million) building its network in the U.K. and Europe, and will introduce the software, provided by U.S. company Lucent Technologies Inc., sometime next year, the newspaper said.
Last month Thus Plc shares rose 8 percent after ScottishPower Plc sold about 1.1 billion pounds ($1.8 billion) of stock in the phone unit to investors who expect it to expand throughout Britain."
Since this is a software product presumably it is used in conjunction with other LU supplied equipment. Software, with periodic updates and enhancements, ought to be a goldmine and a cash cow as well, if I understand how these things go. Correct me if I'm wrong. And what are the implications elsewhere throughout the world of telecom?
