East West Bancorp Ranked Second Highest By Investor's Business Daily's Review of West/Southwest Banks; Bank is Highest Rated Institution in Southern California

SAN MARINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 23, 1999--East West Bancorp Inc. (Nasdaq:EWBC), parent company of East West Bank, one of the nation's best performing community banks and a leading financial institution focused on the Chinese-American and other niche markets, today announced it was ranked second highest on a list of 106 West/Southwest banks in an article published Dec. 6, 1999 by Investor's Business Daily.

The banks were ranked by a combination of Earnings Per Share and Relative Strength. East West Bancorp had a 98 EPS rank and 77 Relative Strength rank. Investor's Business Daily ranks EPS on a 1-99 scale (99 highest) that compares a company's current and annual earnings per share growth rate with all other publicly traded companies. The Relative Strength measures each stock's price change over the last 12 months compared to all other stocks.

The article cited the strong financial performance of banks in the region through 1999, but stated that in the outlook for the group, "branding will become ever more important as financial services become commodities. Banks that build brand can fight price erosion." Dominic Ng, Chairman and CEO stated: "Recognizing this trend, East West has leveraged its well-established brand name in the Chinese-American community to secure its place as a widely recognized leader in trade finance, as well as other niche markets."
