but MM, over time, dont you expect Europe to be left behind as data becomes vitally
important over the wireless airwaves?

what limitations do you see on wireless modem speeds using GSM?

Your supposition that wireless data is vitally important is incomplete. I believe that moderate wireless data speeds (56 .. 100 kpbs) will be more than adequate for the forseable future. Palm VII,
for example, runs quite happily at 9600bps.

GSM GPRS/EDGE will supply these needs.

Adressing an earlier post regarding European cellular.
Europe (Finland in particular) has a much higher cell 'phone penetration than the US. The pan European digital network is first class. I used the one 'phone in Italy, Gernany and UK on my last trip. Pity I can't say the same here in the US.

The wireless networks are operated by new companies like Vodafone, not the PTO's like BT. The two are distinct. The wireless networks are relativley progressive, unlike the plain old telephone networks which are still screwing their customers for every last penny they can.

The PTO's are, in my view, holding up Internet access in Europe with their arcane billing practises. Perversely, this could accelerate the spread of wirless ISP's (running WAP sites) in Europe, giving GSM the edge (no pun intended)
