Tyro,

I guess that I was tried to mince words too much. My take on APA is that they currently have a little box which doesn't really meet any need in the telco market. As you say, they have hired a guy from Ciena and are building a plant in South Dakota for optics manufacturing. (By the way, I have only heard about this on SI [cyberspace], not in the real world [meatspace]). In other words, they don't have a product now (except for their little WDM-wannabee box), and won't have one for a long time. Furthermore, a lot of the big boys in WDM have *already* gotten suppliers lined up for 8, 16 , or 32 channel demultiplexers which *do* meet telco specs. Investment in APAT sounds a little speculative, doesn't it?

Also, why did they decide to put a plant out in South Dakota? It's hard enough to get good engineers in the Bay Area, Boston, or New York! How does APA think that they can lure top-flight photonics talent to move to the badlands of South Dakota?

Stuart
