ISPs allowed use of foreign satellites

HT Correspondent (New Delhi, December 23)

The government today announced its decision to allow Internet service providers (ISPs) to use foreign satellites for setting up international gateways.

The department of telecommunications (DoT) will be the nodal agency to provide single window clearances for the proposals of Internet service providers for obtaining bandwidths from foreign satellites.

The Internet policy earlier announced by the government permits Internet service providers to set up international gateways for the Internet.

The matter relating to use of foreign satellites was under consideration.

The modalities and operational requirements have now been finalized by the Telecom Commission in consultation with the department of space and ministry of information technology.

A standing committee, with representatives from the department of telecommunications, department of telecom services, wireless planning commission and the information technology ministry, and headed by the department of space, has been set up for expeditious clearance of the proposals.

It was officially stated that the standing committee would endeavor to clear the proposals within a period of 15 days and in any case not later than 30 days......
