Everyone has their own style**, but...
evidenced by the moves in the indices, I think you are stepping in front of a train if you are shorting QQQ (putting an appendage on the tracks if you buy Puts :-).

I don't believe I've said this publicly, but in PM's I have said one can short QQQ (for 1-3 points) if you're quick on an intraday basis, but to try to catch the big swing down (assuming we get one soon) is a gutsy play... and anyone who has tried to do it has been laid to waste I would imagine.

Based on seasonality, I wouldn't even think about trying to short QQQ until mid Jan. The only thing that could derail it are Y2K fears. So if you want to play that one, buy puts on 12/31. I would put it at less than 25% chance of any Y2K 'panic'. My guess is any NDX correction won't be much more than -10%.
