Corel LINUX OS Tops 100,000 Downloads on CNET Site: Corel LINUX OS Standard and Deluxe Editions Now On Store Shelves Thursday, December 23, 1999 02:33 PM
OTTAWA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 23, 1999-- COREL(NASDAQ:CORL, news, msgs) (TSE:COR.)
Corel Corporation (NASDAQ: CORL, news, msgs, TSE: COR) is pleased to announce that its Corel(r) LINUX(r) OS has topped 100,000 downloads from the CNET download site (download.com). As of today, Corel LINUX OS is the most popular software product on CNET Shopper.com.
Corel LINUX OS is also available as a not-for-charge download at Corel's Linux site (linux.corel.com) and the TUCOWS Linux site (www.linuxberg.com). The Standard and Deluxe versions of Corel LINUX OS hit store shelves on December 22.
"The response to Corel LINUX OS has been overwhelming on all fronts -- from the reaction at the unveiling at COMDEX/Fall '99, to the awards and the consumer response to our download and the online offerings of the Standard and Deluxe versions," said Dr. Michael Cowpland, president and chief executive officer of Corel Corporation. "All of this is a clear indicator that we have succeeded in this revolutionary desktop effort. Corel LINUX OS is easy to use and to install and is clearly the best all-round desktop solution for new and experienced Linux users."
Corel continues to hold the two most popular Linux downloads on the CNET site: Corel LINUX OS followed by Corel(r) WordPerfect(r) 8 for Linux - Personal Edition. Both Corel LINUX OS and Corel WordPerfect 8 for Linux - Personal Edition are more popular individually than the Red Hat Linux and StarOffice Personal Edition for Linux downloads combined.
Corel LINUX OS was also recently named the CNET's "Editor's Choice" as the best of seven major Linux distributions with the highest score of nine out of 10. CNET's editors identified Corel LINUX OS as "your best option if you want to run Linux as a workstation."
Corel is currently in the process of developing office and graphics suites for Linux. Corel's WordPerfect Office for Linux suite is scheduled to be available in early 2000, and the CorelDRAW graphics suite for Linux is scheduled to be available in the summer of 2000.
