I work in software development and know the kinds of tradeoffs you have to make. You can't please all of the people all of the time.

I work as a software developer as well and I know how mistakes are made by people who don't fully understand the requirements. I also understand the strategy of deflecting it to hardware or software as well as the "blame it on the users" syndrome that programmers go through before they are willing to accept that they were wrong. I also understand the management pressure to get it done now and management's willingness to accept the word of these extremely overworked individuals. I've produced some successful systems and I've also been involved in failures. In both cases I've worked my ass off. Put in many hours. I'm not criticizing the developers. I've bleed for systems that did not workout.

But in my 17 years of software development the one thing I've learned is, if you don't offer something superior to the current system people will bitch. If a user of the system can't understand why it is in their best interest to make the change then you lose. SI made a classic blunder(like starting a land war in Asia or opening up a two front war) they did not attempt to buyin the user. Rather than forecasting the change and asking how to evolve the system, they sprung it on the user. Sure they had a beta, but by the time it was a beta, the users had very little say in the final outcome.

Regards

Tom
