San Ramon, California, Dec. 22 (Bloomberg) -- SuperGen Inc., a fledgling biotechnology company, has licensed rights to an experimental cancer drug that's about to enter late-stage human trials, the company's chief executive said in an interview.
SuperGen, a money-losing company with one drug on the market, will announce the agreement tomorrow, said SuperGen CEO Joseph Rubinfeld.
The product is an experimental cancer vaccine that's is about to enter Phase III trials, Rubinfeld said in an interview with the Bloomberg Forum. He declined to elaborate.
Phase III trials are the last of three stages of testing that the Food and Drug Administration generally requires before it will consider approving a new treatment.
Titan Pharmaceuticals Inc. of the U.S., Transgene SA of France, Canadian biotech firm Biomira Inc. and Cantab Pharmaceuticals Plc are among the companies developing cancer vaccines.
Cancer vaccines are a new type of treatment that are designed to attack cancer by mobilizing the body's immune system against tumor cells. Unlike traditional vaccines, they're not designed to be given to healthy people to prevent them from getting cancer.
Shares in San Ramon, California-based SuperGen fell 3 1/8 to 29 3/8.

Update: Forget the above question. Just noticed this was yesterday's news and it wasn't TTP involved. Actually, I'm glad that TTP didn't hook up with these guys....that is if they have a viable drug. |
